When you live in a place like Alaska it is hard not to show off a little to those who don't get to be here full-time like me. Anyone proud to live where they do will feel the same. Every place has its unique beauty and photographers have the ability to bring out the beauty in just about everything in so many ways. Even some things that are hard for our eyes to see can be made so much better through photography. One example I like to use is the Aurora Borealis. Our eyes can't always see all of what the Aurora has to offer, but once you shoot it with a camera it pops the color out so that it is so much more visible. There are many methods photographers can use to bring out hidden beauty.
I didn't know that photography would be one of my interests, it just fell into place that way. I started to get an interest in mild photography when I started to work for Stan Stephens Cruises. A glacier and wildlife cruise out of Valdez Alaska. Working on the cruises is one of the greater experiences of my life. I meet people from all over the world; Korea, France, Italy, Spain, many US states, and more. I also get to see my fair share of wildlife and amazing scenery. From large green mountains to the retreating face of Columbia Glacier and the advance of Meares Glacier, the scenery never lets you down. The wildlife can be a bit more... well, wild. On one day you could see everything from cute Sea Otters to a breaching Humpback and on the other see little to no wildlife. When it comes to the wild, nothing is certain to be seen. But for the most part, there is always something to see at some point in the day.
I started taking photos with my old iPhone and was doing pretty ok... when everything was very close to the boat. So many of my crewmates had Digital Cameras and were taking these amazing breathtaking photos and none of them had taken classes or learned from a professional photographer. I finally got fed up with my phone and ordered my first camera, a Canon Rebel T7. My uncle is an amazing photography hobbyist and helped me to learn the basics and pick out the right camera and lenses.
Since then I have expanded my knowledge of photography with classes at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and independent research. My arsenal of gear has also expanded and I'm hoping to put my Drone to work getting amazing aerial footage.
That brings us around to the present day. I am continuing to expand my knowledge and improve my work as much as I can so that I can achieve my goal of helping others to feel what I feel when I see things and maybe even so that they will create feelings and memories of their own.
